Soundproofing steel doors is a major concern for many homeowners and builders, particularly when choosing doors for their buildings. While our steel and glass doors at Beehive Metalworks are not specifically designed to be soundproof, there are some key factors inherent to their design and materials that contribute to their sound insulation.
Steel, Glass, and Foam – Materials that Make a Difference
The primary materials we use in our doors are steel and glass. Steel, by its nature, is a good sound insulator. It reflects a large part of the sound waves that hit it, reducing the amount of noise that gets through[1]. The glass we use can be either single glazed, laminated, or insulated dual glaze. Particularly, insulated dual glaze and laminated glass are known to provide increased sound insulation[2].
An additional element that helps in our slimline profile is foam injection. The foam not only provides extra insulation, but also aids in reducing sound transmission[3].
The Importance of a Tight Seal
When it comes to soundproofing, it’s not just about the material used in the doors. One of the most crucial aspects of soundproofing is a tight seal[4]. Noise will follow the path of least resistance. Doors must fit snugly within their frames, with no gaps for sound to seep through. At Beehive Metalworks, we take great care to ensure that each door fits perfectly within its frame, thus minimizing any gaps and potential sound leaks.
However, if there’s any space for air (and therefore, sound) to pass through, it significantly compromises the door’s ability to block sound. A common characteristic of interior swing doors and barn doors is a gap at the bottom to allow free movement of the door. Even with the most sound-resistant materials, this gap can render other soundproofing efforts futile because it allows sound to easily travel from one side to the other.
Conclusion
While our steel and glass doors may not carry a Sound Transmission Class rating, their inherent qualities and design can contribute to the overall sound insulation in your building. We strive to create products that meet the diverse needs of our clients and offer the best possible quality in all aspects, sound insulation included.
